In the summer, one can experience the "Obon" festivals in the towns and villages of Japan.Obon is one of the annual events of Japan. Some regions celebrate it in July, but in the country it is usually between August 13 and 15.With the arrival of Obon, people believe that their deceased family members and ancestors return to heir homes.During the Obon period, people prepare food and other events to welcome the ancestors into their homes. The events described here are from a village in Nagano prefecture, but other regions have similar events.
As the day draws near, people created shelves inside their homes and place flowers and sweets and vegetables on them.Because the ancestors need vehicles when they come home, these too must be ready.Vehicles consist of horses and cows.Horses are made from cucumbers, and cows from egg plant. When they arrive, they ride these fast horses. When Obon comes to an end and it is time to leave, they mount on the slower cows.In the evening of the 13th, flames are prepared in front of the gate, and the houses are made bright. This is referred to as Mukae-bi ("Welcome Flames").If the house is made bright, the ancestors can recognize the location easily, and thus can come straight home. That night, family members and relatives gather and talk about various things, remembering those who have gone ahead of them.Outside the house, people gather in the squares and school grounds and gaily dance the "Obon Dance" until late into the night.
August 16 is the day to send the ancestors back.People take sweets and flowers and place them into the river. At this time, they sometimes light candles and place them along with the flowers into the river.
